Thanks to the lovely and generous Daisy Whitney, author of THE MOCKING BIRDS and THE RIVALS, I was able to read an ARC of SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL by my fellow Apocalypsie–Trish Dollar. And because I *love* you, I’m going to have a contest and give someone else a chance to read it too. Before I explain how you can win this amazing book, let me tell you a little bit about the SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL, Trish and my response to her debut YA novel.
SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL by Trish Doller
When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

Kimberly’s Review of SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL…
It seems like every writer’s conference I attend, someone is always trying to pin down what is meant by that wonderful, but hard to define thing called VOICE. In my opinion, the best way to explain the magic of voice is to have a list of books that contain a distinct and powerful one. Trish Doller’s SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL would absolutely go on my “voice list.” I’m in awe of what she did here.
I’m not sure where to start, because this book has endless depth and layers, but what I do know is that it’s going to be one successful debut. Doller’s knowledge of the military, the amazing nuanced relationships between all the characters, the internal and external struggles, the friendships and the love–It’s all here and I adored every minute of it. There are certain books that I read, where I connect very deeply to the story and the characters because the author has stripped down to his or her vulnerable parts and risked a lot to put a kind of truth down on the page. This is one of those books and Trish Dollar is one of those authors. I am officially a fan-girl for life.
About Trish Doller…
I’ve been a writer as long as I’ve been able to write, but I didn’t make a conscious decision to “be” a writer until fairly recently. For that you should probably be thankful.
I was born in Germany, grew up in Ohio, went to college at Ohio State University, got married to someone really great, bounced from Maine to Michigan and back to Ohio for awhile. Now I live in Florida with my two mostly grown kids, two dogs, and a pirate. For real.
I’ve worked as a morning radio personality, a newspaper reporter, and spent all my summers in college working at an amusement park. There I gained valuable life skills, including counting money really fast, directing traffic, jumping off a moving train, and making cheese-on-a-stick. Also, I can still welcome you to Frontier Town. Ask me sometime.
These days I work as a bookseller at a Very Big Bookstore. And I write.

Now that I’ve got your interest, I bet you’re wondering how to win this ARC. Easy-peasy! In the comments section, please tell me something about yourself that makes you feel less than normal. Don’t be shy, I’ve got a list of things as long as my right arm. Feel free to share them all or just tell me one. And remember… “like normal” is the new normal–so you’re in good company. Don’t forget to leave your contact information in your comment. You can’t win this amazing book if you I can’t reach you. And trust me, you want to win this book. Yup.

Just like my Freaky Friday Interviews of aspiring authors, I’ve discovered that there’s a whole world of YA bloggers just starting out. I thought it would be fun to highlight some of these newbie bloggers because-lets face it-bloggers are freaky book lovers too and we should all work together in our quest to take over the world one YA book at a time.
Today’s baby book blogger is Riya from The Teen Book Guru. Riya and I hit it off when she requested an ARC of TOUCHING THE SURFACE for review. Of course the people at Simon Pulse know I have absolutely no impulse control and are wise not to let me have the keys to the book vault, but that’s okay. I got a new friend out of the request and I just had to share her with you.
Bio: 15. Book Lover. Blogger. Totally Invincible.
Could you tell me a little about you and how you came to be a blogger.
My name is Riya, but all my friends call me Ira (my middle name), and I am an 8th grade student–In just a few months I will proudly be able to say that I have survived Middle School! If there is one thing you should know about me, it’s probably the fact that I am a complete and utter dork. Seriously. But I mean that in the best way possible; I dream of a day when the world is full of more people like us.
I am always engulfed in a story… you won’t be able to find me without a book in hand! I love singing, (much to the dismay of people anywhere in a five mile radius!), writing, blogging, eating, and sleeping. Those are my favorite things to do in the whole wide world. I’ve always been an avid reader as far as I can remember, but I only got immersed in the book blogging community a little more than a month back. I remember very clearly, one day I was on the internet looking up a book and I started to come across all of these wonderful book blogs that dedicated themselves to reading, writing, reviewing and everything and anything to do with books. I remember feeling so much admiration and awe at the dedication, effort and passion they put into all of their posts, and I was inspired. Simple as that. Inspiration hit me in the head, and… bazaam! The Teen Book Guru was born! I think that it is such a great way for me to share my love of reading, and especially my obsession with Young Adult literature, which I do believe is taking over the world.
I love it when inspiration strikes. And because I’m an utter dork too…I absolutely agree, we should take over the world. Now tell me, who has had an influence on you in the blogging community? What have they taught you? Who do you look up to?
I’ve had a lot of influences in the blogging community, and I am so very thankful to all of them. But just to name a few… Rabiah, from Confessions of a Readaholic, who I know personally, and she is just so down to earth and a kind and amazing person; Jessica, from Peace, Love, Books (a gorgeous blog which I often find myself obsessing over), who so generously and patiently offered me words of wisdom and kindness when I felt hopeless; and, of course, Kristi at The Story Siren– lets face it, who has NOT heard of this phenomenal blogger? Those are just a few of the bloggers who have inspired me (if I were to name all of them, we would be here forever!). Some other people who I absolutely adore and could not live without are my best friends, who always encourage me to follow my dreams, but are also there to slap me a couple of times and bring me back to earth when I need it— I love you guys!
Best friends are the BEST! It sounds so cliche but I don’t know what I would do without mine. What advice would you give new book bloggers? Is there any big mistakes you’ve made that they should avoid?
Wow. This might take some time. If I could go back and tell myself one thing, it would definitely be to just ENJOY it. I would tell myself to stop worrying about the number of followers you have, or your stats, and don’t… please don’t compare your blog to other blogs, because that, my fellow bloggers, is the recipe for a disaster (and possibly a meltdown). To all new book bloggers (keep in mind, that I am only a month old myself,), if the number one reason you are starting up your blog is not because you WANT to and you love reading, then don’t do it. Have fun. Hang out with your friends. Eat chocolate. Blog. Life is good.
I think that’s a great mind set to have. I feel the same way about this debut author ride I’m on. I’m just trying to soak it in and enjoy every minute. What do you want to see from author/blogger relationships and interactions, considering they are always growing and changing?
I personally love the way the relationship between authors and bloggers are progressing. I love interacting with authors and talking to them about their books… they really are such lovely people— without them, we wouldn’t have stories and books!! I mean, I don’t really want to see any change, but I just hope that things stay the way they are. What really excites me is that I get to promote books that I so strongly believe in and work alongside the author to spread the news… and the best part is that people actually listen!! That makes me smile. I just feel so happy to do what I believe in and meet all these amazing people who are so inspiring.
And you are so appreciated for your hard work, love and enthusiasm. Thank you so much for all that you do to promote good books. *heart squish* Now you must tell me your top 5 most loved books that have had an impact on you and why.
Hmm… this is a hard one! In no particular order…
*Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine – This is the book that I have grown up with. It’s such a charming fairytale, and has a special place in my heart.
*The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – One of my most beloved classics. Whenever I feel sad, this is the book I go to. The storytelling is amazing and Burnett’s writing is so magical.
*Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte – My copy is battered and creased from all the times I’ve read it. The tragic love story of Cathy and Heathcliff struck a chord inside me– I couldn’t think straight for a whole week after I read this heart-breakingly beautiful classic!
*The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien – One of my absolute favorite series. Tolkien truly is the master of fantasy–his books come alive and the world he creates is so magnificent… I remember wishing I could be transported into the story!!
*Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan – These books introduced me into what is now one of my major obsessions– greek mythology. Riordan craftily incorporates greek myths into a modern day society. I love Percy!
Thanks so much for having me!!! xox Riya
Riya, it was my pleasure. It has been so nice to get to know you better. If you’d like to learn more about Riya you can check out her blog THE TEEN BOOK GURU.

Today is officially my 2nd Runniversary!!!! I have been a runner for two years now and I’m very proud of that. Running was never an activity that I enjoyed, but if you know me personally or read my blog you now that it has come to be many things to me, including a personal, physical challenge and a creative outlet. I’ll be honest, one of the things that brought me to running was the technology. I’m a bit of a feedback freak and Nike’s gadgets for tracking information, allowed me to run outside and still get the info that I craved. It truly won me over. So, to celebrate my competitive nature, here are my stats…
In two years I have gone on 122 runs for a grand total of 94 hours and 40 minutes. I have run 585.25 miles and burned 57,859 calories. Woo hoo!!!!
What’s your favorite form of exercise? Are you a runner? What do you love and have about hitting the pavement? Have I convinced you to start running????
Also, we have a winner for the ARC of IN A FIX by Linda Grimes!!!! Drum roll please…
Congrats to Abigail from All Things Urban Fantasy!!!!!!!!
*COMING SOON* Watch my blog for a chance to win an ARC of Trish Doller’s SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL.

In a Fix

Tor Books
The start of an original new urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel Halligan
Snagging a marriage proposal for her client while on an all-expenses-paid vacation should be a simple job for Ciel Halligan, aura adaptor extraordinaire. A kind of human chameleon, she’s able to take on her clients’ appearances and slip seamlessly into their lives, solving any sticky problems they don’t want to deal with themselves. No fuss, no muss. Big paycheck.
This particular assignment is pretty enjoyable… that is, until Ciel’s island resort bungalow is blown to smithereens and her client’s about-to-be-fiancé is snatched by modern-day Vikings. For some reason, Ciel begins to suspect that getting the ring is going to be a tad more difficult than originally anticipated.
Going from romance to rescue requires some serious gear-shifting, as well as a little backup. Her best friend, Billy, and Mark, the CIA agent she’s been crushing on for years — both skilled adaptors — step in to help, but their priority is, annoyingly, keeping her safe. Before long, Ciel is dedicating more energy to escaping their watchful eyes than she is to saving her client’s intended.
Suddenly, facing down a horde of Vikings feels like the least of her problems.
“A fast-paced, sexy romp with characters as original as its intriguing premise!”
— DIANA GABALDON, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF OUTLANDER
“Linda Grimes’s fast paced supernatural debut is fresh, fun, and sexy, and heroine Ciel Halligan faces both the outlandish and the deadly with a perfect balance of equanimity, irreverence, and nerve. I can’t wait to see where her wild adventures lead her next!”
— VICKI PETTERSSON, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC SERIES

Kimberly’s Review of IN A FIX:
If you follow my reviews, you’ll find that the majority of what I review is Young Adult novels. But I really do enjoy reading other types of books, particularly when they are books from people who have already won me over with their personality and writing style. Linda Grimes is one of my Wolf Pack Sistahs. We’re both represented by the lovely Michelle Wolfson, giving me the squee-worthy opportunity to read Linda’s debut novel as an ARC.
IN A FIX is kick-ass creative! I found the idea of Aura Adaption to be extremely interesting and never did Grimes lose control of the concept. The premise wasn’t bogged down in back story and considering all the people moving going on, I was extremely impressed that I always knew who was who–unless I wasn’t supposed to.
Ciel was an extremely likable character. Flawed and fun, with just the right amount of gumption. And the boys??? Gahhhh Grimes had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out which one I liked more. Seeing as they were all pretty steamy, it was a lot of fun trying to decide. I raced through this debut novel and I can’t wait to read more by Linda Grimes. <3
Linda Grimes grew up in Texas, where she rode horses, embarrassed herself onstage a lot, and taught high school English to students who were more interested in heckling her at the theater where she moonlighted than in learning to conjugate verbs. Somewhere after horses and before teaching, she spent a semester abroad at Stockholm University, where she picked up enough of the native language to become linguistically entertaining. At least, her Swedish teacher seemed entertained when Linda, while attempting to relate, in Swedish, how her aunt had laughed at her, instead claimed her aunt had peed on her. (In Linda’s defense, you’d be surprised at how similar “laughed at” and “peed on” sound in Swedish, at least to American ears.)
Linda currently resides in northern Virginia with her theater-god husband, who succumbed to her charms after seeing her in a musical number at the now defunct Melodrama Theater in San Antonio. (There’s nothing like a rousing chorus of “If You Wanna Catch a Fish You Gotta Wiggle Your Bait” to hook a man for a lifetime.) They managed to spawn two brilliant and gorgeous children—a daughter and a son—both possessed of such generosity of spirit they will no doubt fight over who gets to support their parents when the time comes.
Like her globetrotting main character, Linda has spent her share of time overseas, where, among other things, she witnessed—up close and personal—a police takedown of purse snatcher in Paris, became a bit too acquainted with a gun-running couple in Ireland (through a misunderstanding while breaking into the ruins of a castle closed for the season), and almost froze to death in an ice cave in Switzerland. She has since decided that writing is slightly less hazardous than travel, and tends to stay firmly planted behind her keyboard, torturing her characters instead.
*** You probably want to know how you can win my ARC of IN A FIX. In the comments, please tell me who’s appearance you would like to slip into? Who would you like to be an Aura Adaptor for? Be sure to leave your email address in your comment so that I can let you know if you’re a winner!!!
BTW…You can find out more about Linda Grimes and her debut novel IN A FIX here…

Due to a wicked bout of the flu PLAGUE that hit the whole family, I went running on Monday for the first time in weeks. I knew my first run back would be a little on the slow side, but I was just anxious to get out there. Why? Because running releases more than just sweat. I love this picture because it’s actually how I visualize what’s happening to me when I run. Except, there is another component that I see in my mind’s eye. It isn’t always just what I leave out on the road that’s important–it’s also about what I find along the way.
On Monday I also finished the first draft of my second novel, THE OPPOSITE OF GRAVITY. *happy dance* For me, drafting is a long and painful process. I can not adequately express the joy I feel right now to have a very functional draft to work off of. I LOVE revision and now I’m finally there–sort of. Because for me, writing has it’s own kind of heartbeat. It’s own rhythm. When one thing ends–another begins. The closer I draw to the end of one book, the more the next book starts to move, stretch and grow inside my head. So, as I run, I do this thing that I sort of think of as “unhinging my mind.” When I’m running, I turn off the logic setting and I let my mind travel at random. I allow it to move from one thought to another in the hopes that my subconscious will be the compass–leading me to my own truth.
BINGO!!!!
The plot thread, that was missing from book #3 CHASING ADAPTATION, just appeared in my head along a number of other cool and interesting possibilities. And as my feet pounded the pavement, I had this insane feeling that as I was actually running through the collective conscious, with my mind open like a butterfly net, collecting ideas at the same rate as I was dropping “garbage” behind me. And it felt amazing.
Where do you look to find clarity and inspiration for your writing or your life? What sends your internal compass in the right direction?

For Mother’s Day I watched the original Footloose movie with my husband and my three boys. This scene has always been one of my favorites from the movie. And here are the rest of the boys who get a shout out from me…
*My husband for encouraging my boys to dance. He tells my boys that it’s cool to be a good dancer and feel comfortable on the dance floor. I love him for that.
*My three boys for dancing with abandon and not caring what anyone else might think about them. They dance because it makes them feel good.
*Ren (Kevin Bacon) because he knows that there are things worth fighting for and he treats people, particularly women with respect, which is something I teach my boys all day, every day. And his hair. And for making dancing cool.
*Willard (Chris Penn) because all it takes is one person to reach out and be your friend–to make a difference. And because he is persistent about learning to dance. Hard things take time, but they are usually worth the effort. And because he’s got the moves.
*Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow) because it’s never too late to admit that you might have made a mistake and then its never to late to make a change–especially for the people you love.
*Writer-Dean Pitchford for creating a screen play that shows the dangers of banning books and limiting minds. He illustrates how alike we are within our differences. He wrote with layers and nuance…
Ariel: [to her father, the town preacher] I just don’t know that I believe in everything you believe in. But I believe in you.
Reverend Shaw Moore: I’m standing up here before you today… with a very troubled heart. You see, my friends…I’ve always insisted on… taking responsibility for your lives. But, I’m really… like a first-time parent… who makes mistakes… and tries to learn from them. And like that parent… I find myself at that moment when I have to decide. Do I hold on… or do I trust you to yourselves? Let go and hope that you’ve understood… at least some of my lessons. If we don’t start trusting our children… how will they ever become trustworthy?
Ren: [addressing the town council, reading from his notes in the Bible] “From the oldest of times, people danced for a number of reasons. They danced in prayer… or so that their crops would be plentiful… or so their hunt would be good. And they danced to stay physically fit… and show their community spirit. And they danced to celebrate.” And that is the dancing we’re talking about. Aren’t we told in Psalm 149 “Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song. Let them praise His name in the dance”? And it was King David – King David, who we read about in Samuel – and what did David do? What did David do?
[paging frantically through Bible]
Ren: What *did* David do?
[audience laughs]
Ren: “David danced before the Lord with all his might… leaping and dancing before the Lord.”
[smacks table in front of Reverend Moore]
Ren: *Leaping* and *dancing*.
[stands up straight]
Ren: Ecclesiastes assures us… that there is a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to laugh… and a time to weep. A time to mourn… and there is a time to dance. And there was a time for this law, but not anymore. See, this is our time to dance. It is our way of celebrating life. It’s the way it was in the beginning. It’s the way it’s always been. It’s the way it should be now.
*And to Kenny Loggins for writing some of the best songs on the soundtrack…I know all of them by heart. They make me want to dance. Let’s hear it for the boys!
Now we have to decide the next great movie to see with the kids. What family friendly, but extremely awesome movie do you recommend? What blast from the past has stuck with you over the years?

There are days when I’m completely convinced that this whole book thing is a fluke. Although I hear I’m not alone. It appears that if you’re a writer, then you’re very familiar with this thing called a self-sabatoging lack of belief. It’s what we do–it’s inescapable–just part of how we operate. The majority of the time I’m just mucking around in my manuscript, trying to see if the thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone and if they get together will it be an interesting interaction.
This is particularly stressful at the end of a first draft, when the pressure is on and I can’t see how all these bones are going to form into something that can hold it’s own weight. Some days it feels like the parts are never going to end up in the right places, let alone be engineered for movement. But…
There is this magical moment when something happens and my brain starts acting like it’s had this amazing plan all along and–lucky me–now it’s finally letting me in on it. And that’s when I realize that my subconscious is a heck of a lot smarter than I usually give her credit for. Smart enough to help me write a great book, but also smart enough to realize that the book is a journey–a personal puzzle. Things mean more when you have to fight for them–when you run the risk of failure. But when the light comes one, those illuminated moments give me chills. And that feeling is worth working for and waiting for.
I know that the rug will be pulled out from beneath my feet again soon. Crit partner, agent, editor–they will take my “finished” masterpiece and search for holes and point out dead ends. It won’t be long before I’ll be talking non-stop about my incompetence and my utter lack of writing talent. That’s why I wanted to write myself this blog–as a reminder that those magic moments will come again. Think of this post as a ribbon wrapped around my finger, reminding me that I am the sum of my parts and some of my parts aren’t so bad. I’ve got good bones in me and I know what to do with them if I give myself the chance.
What’s your worst fear about your writing? What’s your magic moment–the one when you know that you are doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing?
